10 Races That Will Change America
Colorado United States Senate
In Colorado , Democrat Mark Udall and Republican Bob Schaffer battle to succeed retiring Republican Wayne Allard.Udall, who leads in the polls, is from a political family with one cousin running for senate in NM this year as a Dem and another (Gordon Smith) serving as a Senator form Oregon .Schaffer has spent his life in politics, first having been elected to the state senate at 24 and serving in the US house for a self-limited 6-year stint ending in '02.
Conservative firebrand Marilyn Musgrave faces tough races every cycle, this time against Betsy Markey, a former staffer for Ken Salazaar and her best-funded opponent yet.Markey leads in the latest poll, but the district leans republican and Musgrave is in the regular practice of fighting extremely hard races and achieving narrow margins.
GOPer Tom Rooney just emerged from the primary and will face endangered incumbent Tim Mahoney in November.
Rooney, an Army vet and west point instructor, is best known as heir to the Pittsburgh Steelers fortune, but Mahoney, who has never served in the military, is known as the ‘accidental congressman' elected in a conservative district that gave Bush 55% in '04 in the wake of Mark Foley's resignation. He had never held elective office before. Mahoney believes that homeland security means port security and first responders.
